SAG HARBOR ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

For preschool (beginning at age four) through 5th grade, local students attend Sag Harbor Elementary School, where they take classes in core subjects, including reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Students also take a “special” class each day, often a supplemental course like Spanish, art, music, or physical education. The school is relatively small, with approximately 400 students in total, allowing for an excellent teacher-to-student ratio. Elementary-aged students love receiving more individualized attention from their teachers!

The school offers several opportunities throughout the day to get outside and enjoy the fresh air. During recess and breaks, students will be able to play outside and get in some physical activity.

PIERSON MIDDLE SCHOOL

Students in grades 6 through 8 attend the nearby Pierson Middle School, located at the same location as Pierson High School. During the 6th grade, classes are offered in seven core subjects: Math (including arithmetic, science, and technology), English Language Arts, Social Studies (including geography and United States History), Foreign Language, Arts (including music, dance, theater, and visual arts), Physical Education, and the unique PLANT course, “Preparing Learners for a New Tomorrow.” The PLANT course is an introductory class for the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum and teaches students to use quantitative reasoning, assess the credibility of information, and take ownership of their education.

After moving on to the 7th and 8th grades, students take courses in all of the subjects above while also studying Home and Career Skills, Health Education, and Library and Information Skills. Students choose to study either Spanish or French as their foreign language and can also choose from exciting and enriching electives like Band, Chorus, Orchestra, Art, Physical Education, and Technology.

But the learning doesn’t end in the classroom - students can also choose to participate in clubs or extracurricular activities, pursuing and cultivating new hobbies and interests. Some choices include Middle School Student Council, Girls Who Code, MS Robotics, MS Literary Magazine, MS Math Olympiad, MS Newspaper, Jazz Band, and Chamber Orchestra. Students can also audition for the Middle School Musical or play on Pierson Athletics sports teams.

For students who need a little extra boost, there is an Academic Support period offered where they can go to a teacher for homework help or curriculum assistance. Pierson Middle School also prides themselves on their Guidance and Counseling Center, which provides personal counseling, academic guidance, and even early college planning should the student need it.
